Every weekend across the country are sporting events that offer enormous potential of the image. Local sports, eg football and rugby, are much simpler to access the large stadium events, and are a fantastic opportunity to master the techniques of the key action and improve their composition.
Soon, no professional duty that can shoot from the sideline and close enough to the action using just over a 70-300mm telephoto zoom.
Dim light in the UK may make it impossible to fire action successful in low ISO settings. It's much better to freeze the action and put up with some noise or grain that have erased the images.
To stop the action in its tracks, use a shutter speed of 1 / 250 sec or faster. Remember that the longer the focal length you are using, the most critical is to establish a faster shutter speed to cope with the danger of camera shake.
Messy, distracting funds are one of the most common problems you may face when photographing local sporting events. Classical problems of parking for cars, buildings and fences. Walk around the pitch to find a point of view that lets you take pictures with a clean background. More distant objects are less of a challenge than those near the stadium, as they are less complicated to pull out of focus (beyond the depth of field) with a wide aperture like f / 4 or 5.6. Finding a focus to attract the viewer's attention is often the key to a successful draft. The expression and the effort shows in the face of the player could make or break this type of image.
Try to ensure that the ball is visible in shot, as it gives the context of the image, also get the player in possession crisp and clear for maximum impact. Exact composition is not possible, of course, but the better you know the game they are covering, the more you will be able to predict what might happen and be able to capture.
Why not try a firing sequence while you're at it? Try to shoot in bursts of 4 or five frames per second, rather than setting the camera to throw away quickly.
