Photographing wildlife can be a highly rewarding hobby, when you know some basics. Knowing some key tips for wildlife photography are infinitely helpful. They can mean the difference between a ho-hum snapshot and a truly beautiful, professional-looking picture.
First you should decide what it is you want to capture on film. If you just want some nice bird pictures, for instance, you may not need to leave your back yard.
On the other hand, if you want elk to be your subject, you probably will need to do some travelling. Obviously, you’ll need to go to whatever environment your target is likely to be found.
When it comes to wildlife photography tips, the most important thing you need is patience! No wild creature is likely to simply walk up to you and pose. You need to wait patiently for just the right moment.
Know your subject. Study up on the natural behavior of the animal you are interested in. This can be a tremendous help, when you know what to expect. Capture a moment of the animal acting natural.
Keep as much distance as possible from the animal. This is for two reasons; one being not to frighten it away. The other is, if it’s a potentially dangerous creature such as a bear or moose, for your own safety. Make sure you have someplace to retreat to if you’re suddenly charged; such as a vehicle or nearby building where you’ll be safe.
Instead of getting too close, use a telephoto lens to zoom in on the subject. Good photography tips for any application, not just wildlife photos, always say to center the subject and allow it to fill the frame. Otherwise, it will look too far away and the background will distract the eye away from your subject.
Speaking of eyes, this is another important area. When looking at a photo of another living thing, our eyes are naturally drawn to the subject’s. Try to get a clear shot of the creature’s eye in your picture.
Position yourself so that the sun is behind you. This is important for proper lighting; otherwise you’re likely to be disappointed with the results.
Some obvious digital photography tips are to have enough free memory and fresh batteries. Also many digital cameras don’t require as much zoom power as film cameras.
Just knowing a few simple tips can make all the difference when it comes to wildlife photography.
