Having taken taken wildlife photographs of monkeys. bats, birds and butterflies, I can say there are several things to remember. First is that it is life in the wild and second that proper photography is an art. Be ready to get dirty and learn to develop patience as well as pictures. But there are some wildlife photography tips that everybody needs to know.
One of the main tips for wildlife photography is to know your wildlife. Where does it live? What does it feed on? What time of day or night is it most active? Also, is it dangerous, should you use a telephoto lens? All of this will tell you where to be and when to be there, without it you are relying totally on luck.
Go out several times, stalk your prey. You are a hunter, just hunting for excellent photos and shooting with a camera! Scout for the ideal spot with the best background and longest shooting range! Most animals won’t let you get close.
Like a hunter knows his gun, you need to know your camera. What is the optimum focal length of the zoom to achieve the clearest photos? How long an exposure time will be required to take quick, focused shots? Is there an action setting to take rapid sequence shooting? Macro lenses are best for close-up, but except for insects few wildlife photos will be taken that close up. One of the best photography tips that you can be given is to learn your camera before going out.
So go out, take your shots and take lots. Professional photographers take thousands of pictures to just get one or two of excellent quality. This is easier and less expensive to do with digital cameras some chips can hold 1000+ high quality images then be quickly changed; no more heavy bags or fumbling with 35mm film.
Let’s go over some digital photography tips. One is to get a good camera with high optical zoom instead of just digital zoom, this gives better focus and clarity. Also remember that the larger the megapixel, the finer the grain, the better the enlargements; not always true but a good basic concept. Also, take extra batteries and chips, you will run out at the critical moment.
Once you have taken the photographs, load them into the computer; this applies to 35mm as well as digital. Now use a “photoshop” (there are numerous ones available and your digital camera will likely have come with one) to further adjust them. Duplicate them and put one set in a separate folder, play with the others adjusting brightness, contrast and colours. Experiment and find what you like, you’ve always got the spare set to fall back on!
With wildlife photography, remember the old West Indian saying “A man can go fishing everyday, but he doesn’t catch fish everyday”. Go out, keep trying and you will get some photos worth having.
