If you want to make good photos, keep your camera handy. The perfect photos may be fleeting moments and then they are gone forever.
When you have a family gathering, take a lot of candid rather than posed photos. Often these candid shots may be the best photos of the day.
Even if you prefer to shoot with film, purchase a digital camera. You can compose photos with the digital and then take shots with the film camera. With the digital the good can be saved and the others deleted. You can instantly view your composition on the digital camera and reproduce the same shot with your film camera.
If you are shooting a photo of a family member in a landscape scene, don’t center the subject. Imagine your view is divided by two lines vertically and two lines horizontally. That would break the view into thirds. Place your subject at one of the intersecting lines and you will have a much more pleasing photo. Be aware of the horizon and don’t let the horizon be centered, but rather 1/3 from the top or bottom.
Experiment with various settings and exposures to get some unusual shots. Don’t just shoot the same old scenes over and over.
Try some black and white film occasionally. This film captures detail better than color and can produce some striking photos.
Shoot lots of photos. That is one positive aspect of digital cameras. If you have a couple of one gigabyte cards or a two gig card, you can shoot tons of photos and only save the best.
Professional photographers shoot lots of photos, but we only see the best shots. By doing the same, you will be respected as a great photographer by your friends and family.
Share your photos and ask a professional or someone that you know is a skilled photographer to critique your work. If you listen to some honest criticism, it will help to improve the quality of your work.
Buy the best camera gear that you can afford. Good equipment will not make you a good photographer, but all things being equal, it will certainly give you a leg up.
Get out there and keep that shutter clicking and have a good time. Photography is a great hobby that you can enjoy throughout your life.
