Immediate gratification might very well be the most thought provoking concept when it comes down to pressing that button in the digital age. Like the Polaroid camera of yesterday (which still exists), people love to have fun with sentimental imagery. I’m not going to “zoom in” and talk about the digital camera because we all know that it’s evolved into an amazing piece of machinery, albeit the quality may be off a little. But who cares about perfect quality when the whole world is now taking photographs, from cameras to cell phones, HOW AMAZING! I get a new batch of photos on a regular basis and display them on Flickr, it feels like Christmas putting up my photos. It’s instant gratification just like this site has it’s fair share of quick gratification. But photography in general has just gone nuts. I honestly think just about everything on this planet has been photographed once, if not twice, and people are doing it quicker and more efficiently. This is not a topic for hobbyists. This is a very serious dilemma which effects our privacy, our human rights and the trajectory of humanity. Also, it is fair to say that humanity is slightly going two dimensional. Our brains are so fascinated with modern photography that we forget our real selves.
One has to think outside the box here a little. I’ve read the other comments on “photography in the digital age” and perhaps one ought think a little more about the ramifications of this quick fix kind of picture taking. Here we are talking about various photographers from the past and what sorts of cameras work better. It is assumed that if the general public can “Google Earth” and see their own neighborhoods, imagine what the FBI can really see and photograph.
Think beyond the hand held camera. Think about digital photography at toll booths that capture ones license plate number if one chooses not to pay. Think about the digital video cameras that have been installed on highways, for safety and for quick traffic to radio communications. Think about the digital cameras at the bank, at the airport. Think about the new digital photography that is now able to see into abyss after abyss of universe and space. Think about the various ways in which a digital camera can filter out certain particles, infrared,
