OK – hypothetical question time. Actually it’s not really hypothetical as its based upon something I go through every year when it’s my birthday (which was actually yesterday – hence this post).
Here is the question:
It’s your birthday coming up and everyone is asking you ‘what do you want?’
They all want to buy you something for your photography – so it has to be photography related (gear, books, accessories).
Your friends and family each have a different budget so you’ve got to answer the question 3 times – how would you answer it for these three budgets?
- Your little sister has a $40 budget – what would you ask for?
- Your parents have been saving up an have a $200 budget – what would you ask for?
- Your rich aunt has $2500 for your present (you really love your aunt) – what would you ask for?
Surf the photography section on Amazon and use their prices as a guide and come back and tell us which three gifts you’d ask for!

My birthday was two weeks ago
Mine would be a tripod bag.
Sister – photo paper
Parents – camera bag
Aunt – air tickets for photo related travel. (I promise I’ll send a postcard – a good one)
Easy. 70-200mm L Mark II
My birthday was last week
Sister: Books (I got gels, which fits this category perfectly)
Parents: a PocketWizard MiniTT1 transmitter or maybe an expodisk and a Slingshot 202AW
Aunt: 5DMkII or a EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM II (Auntie dear, I have expensive tastes if you have the cash!)
For a little sister with a $40 budget I would take our picture together and split the cost of a beautiful frame.
From my parents I would ask for a dinner with our family all together I would ask someone to take our photo.
From my rich aunt I would want a decent bicycle to ride around and take photos.
$40 budget – PowerGenix One-Hour Quick Charger with 4 “AA” NiZn (Nickel-Zinc) Batteries
$200 budget – Giottos MT-7371
$2500 – Nikon 85mm 1.4 & Leica V-Lux 20
did you need my shipping address???
Your little sister has a $40 budget – what would you ask for?: A gift card to Amazon or B&H to put towards new camera gear.
Your parents have been saving up an have a $200 budget – what would you ask for?: A gift card to Amazon or B&H to put towards new camera gear.
Your rich aunt has $2500 for your present (you really love your aunt) – what would you ask for?: A gift card to Amazon or B&H to put towards that full frame camera I’ve been drooling over.

I would ask for encouragement and support to use what I already have. I would ask them to please not buy me any stuff. If they need to spend some money, I would ask for a contribution to a photography workshop fund.
$40 : I’d buy few SD cards
$200 : A camera bag
$2500 : This would be more than sufficient to go for a really long photography tour around the country.
My sister: a photog (online) magazine subscription
my parents: a portrait session from me so I can put the money toward a new lens
my sweet sweet rich auntie: a nikon 70-200mm f2.8 is about that much isn’t it? I love you auntie richy pants.
