pAs an aspiring photographer, I know full well how expensive it can be to get good, or even mediocre gear, much less top-of-the-line equipment. An entry-level DSLR camera runs $600-800, a decent telephoto lens is hard to be had for less than $600, and many of the new ultra-fast, stabilized lenses run several thousand dollars. With Christmas just around the corner, what can there be on a photographer’s list that won’t break the bank?/p
p1. Circular polarizing filter: These only cost around $40, and enhance pictures by eliminating reflections, producing more vibrant colors./p

p2. Tripod: While top-end tripods do cost $100 or more, a good sturdy tripod will also run in the area of $40. A more versatile alternative is the gorillapod, which can be posed, wrapped around poles, or put in any other position for about $30-$40 as well./p
p3. Memory card: It is always a good idea to have several memory cards handy. Having 4-5 2gig cards is better than having 1-2 6gig cards because if a malfunction happens to a smaller card, you lose fewer pictures. 2gig cards run only $30 or so./p
p4. Photography books: An aspiring photographer can never read too much. Read books on technique, hardware, style, selling photos, image rights, and even just books of images from the masters. Most soft cover books will run $20 or less. /p
p5. Lens cleaning: An essential for all photographers, lens cleaning equipment is fairly inexpensive. At the very least I would recommend a dust blower and a terrycloth lens wipe. Together these two items are less than $20./p
pA little research will find several more inexpensive, but very necessary, ideas for the shutterbug in your life. Be prepared this holiday season for great photos at great prices!/p
