Portraits will always look better using a longer focal length. 150 to 200 mm is always good. If you are restricted for room and cannot get back far enough shooting at about 70 mm would be fine. I have actually stood outside a door and shot into the room because it was so small. The other point about using short lenses is if you are too close it will distort the subject and would not be flattering.

@alamidgene i have the sx10is too. what i do is move back a bit, zoom in at around 55mm-180mm, then either go to macro mode or manual focus to get that blurry background. Of course, that only works outside or enough light since the speed goes down to 1 second or 3 seconds without a flash (and an f/4.0+). If you plan on doing portraits indoors, buy a flash, preferably one that can be triggered wireless so it can get close to your subject

I have a canon sx10is. its not interchangeable lens but the specs said that the lens is equivalent to 28-560. Can i also get a good portraits photo out of this camera by moving away backward and zoom in until I passed the 70 up to 200mm..?

  23. copper4534 says:

My favourite is the Tamron 18-270 for my canon. I absolutely love it as a general purpose lens.

  24. thetttttttttttt says:

50mm and 18mm are very different, using 18mm to demonstrate distortion is stupid as 50mm and up would be a portrait lens with limited distortion. you would have to look for distortion to notice it.

  25. rockee123 says:

He’s only using an 18mm lens to exaggerate distortion with a wide angle. Pay attention.
